Fare categories – how it works

The AVV network fare depends upon the city and district limits in the network area. The rule is: One city or district – one price. There are four overall fare categories which are calculated depending on the distance from your departure area – the city or district where you start your journey. If you are making short journeys, the cheapest travel within a short-journey zone is with Einzel- or 4Fahrten-Tickets.

TIP: Are you looking for the fare category for your connection? Our fare category calculator is here to help you.

Fare categories

Here we demonstrate the fare category system taking Düren as an example. Düren is the departure area where you start your journey by rail or bus.

Ticket from the Düren fares zone demonstrates journeys within a short-journey zone.

Short journey K applies for single journeys (Einzelfahrt) within a short-journey zone. Example: Journeys within short journey zone K 75.

Ticket from the Düren fares zone demonstrates journeys within the Düren city limits at fare category 1.

Fare category 1 applies to any journey within gone city or district. TOP:  Fare category 1 also applies for Einzel-Tickets and 4Fahrten-Tickets between two bordering short-journey zones in neighbouring cities and districts. Example: Journeys within the Düren city limits and journeys between the short-journey zones K 75 (Düren) and K 90 (Kreuzau).

Fare category 2 applies to journeys between your departure area and a neighbouring city or district, as demonstrated by a ticket for the fares areas Düren and Langerwehe.

Fare category 2 applies to journeys between your departure area and one neighbouring city or district. Example: A journey between Düren city and the Langerwehe district.

Fare category 3 applies to journeys between your departure area and a distant destination area, as demonstrated by a ticket for the fares areas Düren and Jülich.

Fare category 3 applies to journeys between your departure area and a distant destination area. Example: A journey between Düren and Jülich.

A ticket from the network area demonstrates that fare category 4 applies for all journeys in the AVV network.

Fare category 4 applies to the entire area served by the AVV (Aachen city and Aachen district, Düren, Heinsberg district).
